Galatasaray have been the whipping boys with Champions League this season after losing badly at the hands of Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund.
The 4-1 loss against Dortmund is the latest in a string of bad results for the Turkish club. However, manager Cesare Prandelli feels that his team should have had a much better result for the performance but they put in. The former Italy boss took over the regime from Roberto Mancini, who was relieved of his duties for more poor performance in the Champions League. Galatasaray are almost certain not to reach the last 16 stage of the European competition.
They sit bottom of the group after four matches. This was the third consecutive loss for the team, but Prandelli says that he saw a significantly improvement from his players. Prandelli will have a difficult time explaining the statistics given that Galatasaray had only two shots on target compared to six from the opposition. Their performance in the league has also been not convincing enough.
After being expected to challenge for the title, Galatasaray are third – behind rivals Besiktas and Fenerbahce – after 10 matches of the season. Fenerbahce have the opportunity to extend their lead given that they have a game in hand.
Prandelli can at least get consolation from the fact that his team scored a goal, which is something that they did not do in the 4-0 reverse loss.”When you look at our performance, it wasn’t a fair result.
The guys worked very hard and, compared to the first game in Istanbul, we have improved. We conceded the goals because of some small mistakes, but we’ll get better in time,” said Prandelli. Even a third-place finish will ensure that Galatasaray remain in Europe, albeit in the Europa League. Their next match in the Champions League group stage is against Anderlecht.
