AJAX KEEP THE PRESSURE UP

Dutch club Ajax managed to keep the pressure on the current leaders of the Dutch table – AZ Alkmaar – after they managed a 2-0 win over archrivals PSV. This was always going to be a tough match for Ajax, but they showed great character in order to keep pace with the leaders at the top of the table. The win was extremely crucial because of the fact that Alkmaar had earlier won the match against RKC Waalwijk 1-0, which provided them a four-point cushion at the top of the table. However, following the win over PSV, Ajax now close the gap to just one point with only a few games remaining in the season.

Ajax were coming into the match against PSV on a good run of form, which has seen them win five straight matches on the bounce. However, many expected PSV to provide a stern opposition for Ajax, but that never arrived after Ajax quickly established their dominance in the match through goals from Siem De Jong and Ismail Aissati. The latter scored in the 56th minute to finally provide a breakthrough in the match, which was growing extremely tense from an Ajax perspective. Once the deadlock had been broken, it became a lot easier for PSV extended their lead.

Siem De Jong converted from the penalty spot shortly afterwards to hand Ajax a 2-0 lead in the match. This was more than enough for the team in form, as they held on for the remainder of the match to close the gap on Alkmaar to just one point. Both Ajax and Alkmaar have played 27 games in the league so far. The latter has a slight advantage in the league table with just one point, although Ajax have a far superior goal difference when compared with AZ Alkmaar.
